This week we went to the Vermont Farm Show in Barre, VT. As a farm that is hoping to call Vermont home this was THE place to find some great resources. I thought I'd share a few with you. These are by no means recommendations on the services the below businesses provide as we have only spoken with them briefly but I just wanted to provide an overview of what we saw, who we met and good places to start if you are considering the below options yourself.
We learned that there are still banks out there willing to loan for building, land and agriculture. Yankee Farm Credit spent some time speaking with us about loans and other services they provide such as tax services and record keeping. This is still a ways down the road for us but it was a great to know that when we find land this bank might be able to help us out!
There was information and booths on companies who can clear your land, drill your well (H.A. Manosh Corp at 1-800-544-7666) and help you find a farm. There were lots of freebies like rulers, pens, pencils, a sewing kit and chip clips. Please cheese samples and candy. There were several booths on business, auto, home and farm insurance.
One of the business we were very excited to find was Daedalus Solar Works. The specialize in Evacuated Tube Collectors as a way to harness the sun's energy to heat your home and water. We're still doing research on solar energy and what our best decision might be once we find our land and are ready to heat our home but this seemed to make a lot of sense and we will definitely be revisiting them in the future.
There was a whole arena filled with tractors like John Deere, New Holland and the like. We got a coupon from Tractor Supply.
And of course, the trip wouldn't have been complete without a stop at the VLAA Booth (Vermont Llama and Alpaca Association. They had two cute alpacas in the pen and Ron Miller from Snowshoe Farm was there to speak with visitors about alpacas and llamas.
This photo was from Agape Hill Farm and I borrowed it as it shows the booth and alpacas perfectly!
We really had a great time at the show and it was worth the 3.5 hour drive (one way) to see everything and make some new contacts. We are headed in the right direction and hope to have our own farm soon! With the great information we got we know we'll be just fine.
